British Values
What are the fundamental British Values?
-
Democracy: Democracy is the cornerstone of British governance. It emphasises the right to vote, freedom of expression, and the ability to participate in decision-making processes. In schools, promoting democracy can involve student councils where pupils voice their opinions and contribute to school improvements.
-
The Rule of Law: This value underscores the importance of adhering to laws and regulations. It ensures fairness, justice, and accountability. Teaching the rule of law helps students understand their rights and responsibilities within a lawful framework.
-
Individual Liberty: Individual liberty celebrates personal freedom while recognising the limits imposed by the rights and freedoms of others. It encourages self-expression, autonomy, and respect for diverse perspectives.
-
Mutual Respect: Mutual respect involves treating others with kindness, empathy, and consideration. It fosters a harmonious environment where differences are acknowledged and appreciated. Schools can promote mutual respect through inclusive practices and anti-bullying initiatives.
-
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs: Britain’s rich cultural tapestry includes various faiths and beliefs. Tolerance encourages understanding, acceptance, and dialogue across diverse backgrounds. Schools play a crucial role in nurturing an environment where students appreciate and learn from different cultures and traditions.
Teaching British values is crucial for several reasons:
-
Social Cohesion: By instilling these values, we promote a sense of unity and shared identity among diverse communities. When individuals understand and respect British values, they contribute to a harmonious society.
-
Citizenship Education: British values are integral to being an informed and responsible citizen. They empower individuals to actively participate in democratic processes, understand their rights, and fulfill their civic duties.
-
Preventing Extremism: Teaching these values helps safeguard against radicalization. When young people appreciate democracy, tolerance, and the rule of law, they are less susceptible to extremist ideologies.
-
Promoting Inclusivity: British values emphasize mutual respect and tolerance. Schools play a vital role in creating an inclusive environment where students appreciate cultural diversity and learn from one another.
-
Preparation for Life: These values equip students with essential life skills, such as critical thinking, empathy, and understanding different perspectives. They prepare young people for adulthood and active participation in society.
Each week, we use the wonderful resource, 'Picture News', here at Croft Infants. This is a great opportunity for our children to really explore what is happening in their world and to see how the events link to British Values. The value is displayed in our hall (see the photo above) and is a chance for everyone to think about it through the week. We always have some really interesting discussions!
Peter Picture News bear is always on hand to listen to our ideas. We hold him as we are talking and show respect by listening to others and waiting our turn - then we know everyone is treated fairly.
