PE!

PE is about being active and healthy.

Our fabulous PE lead is Mrs Daniells!

Intent:

At Croft Infant School, we aim to inspire active children who are aware of healthy lifestyles and enjoy physical activity. We believe that high quality Physical Education enables every child to develop knowledge, skills and vocabulary through a broad range of sporting activities, as well as developing values and transferable skills such as fairness and respect.

At Croft Infant School, our PE curriculum allows children to be provided with opportunities to become physically confident in a way in which supports their health and well-being. Through high-quality lessons, outdoor provision, extra-curricular activities and clubs, children will take part in many different sporting activities, cooperative sports and competitive sports. This helps to embed life-long values such as fairness, respect, responsibility and determination and develops a love of sport. We aim to provide opportunities for our children to be resilient and cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities.

Children will develop fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching, and extend their agility, balance and co-ordination, healthy competition against themselves and others, and cooperative learning. They will learn to apply their skills to team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.

We will ensure that children experience Physical Education in a safe and secure environment and that activities are planned for which stimulate and engage all children to participate fully on all lessons.

We fully adhere to the aims of the: -

Early Years Foundation Stage Framework:

  • Children show good control and co-ordination in large and small movements. They move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space.
  • Children know the importance for good health of physical exercise, and a healthy diet, and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe.
  • They manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs successfully, including dressing and going to the toilet independently.

Primary National Curriculum for physical education to ensure that all children:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Know how to co-operate and collaborate with each other as part of a team
  • Lead healthy, active lives

Implementation:

Our PE curriculum aims to ensure that all children develop the fundamental knowledge, skills and competence to excel in a wide range of physical activities by providing a broad and balanced curriculum. PE at Croft Infant School is inclusive for all children, lessons and resources are adapted where necessary to ensure that all children can meet their potential.

AVSSP, a leading physical activity and training provider, deliver lessons and CPD to our children and staff, improving and developing the teaching of PE further. The PE curriculum is taught using AVSSP planning, which is inclusive, sequenced appropriately and shows a clear progression of skills and knowledge taught across the school. The planning is fully aligned to meet the National Curriculum and EYFS requirements. This is also used to aid teaching staff in their subject knowledge. Teachers can adapt the planning to tailor it to meet the needs of the children, but the planning provides a strong basis of what is expected.

Teaching of PE in EYFS:

Children in Reception have access to a range of well-planned and stimulating activities, both indoors and outdoors, that build on their fine motor and gross motor development, which will be a balance of both adult led and child initiated. They have one structured weekly PE session delivered by our Specialist Coach from AVSSP in line with the rest of the school.

Teaching of PE in KS1:

Children in KS1 are timetabled to 2 hours of high-quality PE lessons every week covering Gymnastics, Dance, Games and the fundamental skills, these lessons are taught by the class teacher and the Specialist AVSSP coach.

Assessment:

In EYFS children will be assessed against the Foundation Stage profile for their Physical Development. In KS1 pupils progress will be tracked using the AVSSP online portal. Learning Journals, Floorbooks, Observations and Videos will be used as the key assessment tools for all year groups.

To promote healthy lifestyles, we discuss the impact of exercise on our bodies. We encourage parents to pack healthy lunchboxes and offer a fruits snack and promote drinking water throughout the day. We build opportunities for short bursts of activity and mindfulness, using a range of resources such as GoNoodle, Just Dance and Cosmic Yoga.

Impact:

At Croft Infants you will see:

  • Motivated children who enjoy participating in a variety of sports which are engaging and fun.
  • Children utilising skills and knowledge acquired in PE lessons.
  • Children with an awareness of and developing responsibility for their own health, well-being and fitness.
  • Children developing a love of sport, leading to a happy and healthy life.
  • Children who are eager to attend after school clubs and competitive sports events.

Children at Croft enjoy PE sessions and are active throughout most of the lesson. Children recognise the impact of physical activity on their bodies and can talk about healthy living. Children’s physical stamina and skills develop over their time here, from Reception to Year 2, enabling the majority of children to acquire the age-appropriate related knowledge and skills linked to the PE curriculum at the end of KS1, so they are well prepared for their next key stage.
