Maths Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent
Maths is a skill we use on a daily basis, and forms an essential part of everyday life. At Croft we want our learners to -
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics.
- Develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly.
- To reason and problem solve by applying mathematics to a variety of increasingly complex problems.
- To build upon children’s knowledge and understanding from the EYFS to year 2.
- To develop resilience that enables all children to reason and problem solve with increasing confidence.
Implementation
- We follow a mastery approach to maths and teaching offers scaffolding to match the needs and abilities of all our children to ensure that ‘everyone can’ enjoy and learn in maths.
- To ensure full topic coverage, the school uses ‘White Rose Maths’. This is a whole-school maths curriculum that creates continuity and progression in the teaching of mathematics.
- Alongside White Rose other resources can be used to ensure variety in practice activities offered. These include NRich and NCETM.
- Maths lessons and introduction sessions include fluency, reasoning and problem solving within small, sequential steps of learning.
- Learning about patterns and connections is vital to help children make predictions and form logical connections. We leach pattern lessons as we consider it an important foundation for later mathematical thinking and reasoning.
- Children explore their maths learning independently in Continuous and Enhanced Provision activities.
- Concrete manipulatives and pictorial representations are used to support conceptual understanding and to make links across topics.
- Assessment takes place after each small step of learning and children who need further support or consolidation of a concept are identified. Pre teaching and interventions are used to support learners and address misconceptions.
- Children's attainment and progress is discussed with parents/carers during parents evenings.
Impact
Children are happy to talk about their maths learning using appropriate maths language. They understand that what they learn in maths will be useful in everyday life. Children know that mistakes can strengthen their learning and are happy to ‘have a go’, choosing the equipment that they think will help. Our books build up evidence of what children achieve in Continuous Provision and in adult supported tasks through the use of photographs and formal written methods.
In their independent learning, the Y2s created a 'Toy Shop' where their friends could 'buy' toys using 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coins to make amounts up to £2.
